On 22 July 2023 volunteers from the Centre for Social Action were taken to a well-known social service centre – ASVAS (a care centre for the needy). Every day around 300 people make use of the free mid-day meal distribution service for the hungry, sick, elderly and slum children of the locality. Usually, patients and bystanders come from National Kidwai Cancer Institute and National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS). Mrs Preethi Rao, the teacher coordinator of CSA along with 12 student volunteers took part in the mid-day meal service from cutting vegetables to serving food. The volunteers put on a  small cultural show for the people while they ate. The activity warmed the hearts of all who participated and at the same time educated all about the realities of life.

Synergy Session I

As teachers, we are busy taking care of everyone else and often just do not seem to have the time for ourselves. ‘The best time to relax is when we do not have time for it’ and anything that helps us unwind and relax is a pleasure worth pursuing. Therefore the Quality Enhancement Group (QEG) of Christ Junior had conducted a small activity session to lift up the spirits of all teachers of Christ Junior College, Christ PU College and Christ Junior College-IBDP.  Team building activities were held on 3 October 2023 from 2.30 – 3.30 pm at the Dharmaram Ground.  The session began with an icebreaker,  a story narration on ‘Mr and Mrs Wright’ promoting active listening. The first activity was ‘Lava walk’ for which the staff were asked to divide themselves into ten teams. The participants assumed that the floor has lava and each team crossed 100 metre distance stepping only on the protection sheets given.  The teams explored the best ways to cross the other side.  The activity intended a creative way to encourage movement and sensory motor play. The second activity was a timed challenge to see who could make the longest paper chain out of the same number of resources given to each team.  This activity encouraged all to talk to one another whilst thinking of many ways to improve upon the design and then collaborate. At the end of the session, all participants felt relaxed and recharged! The need for several such synergy sessions in future was expressed.

World Mental Health Day

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2023, the Department of Counselling at Christ Junior College observed the same to propagate Mental Health- a Universal Human Right. It should be considered normal to seek help and assistance irrespective of what one is going through by talking about it, without much struggle on one’s own part. Anyone can learn coping skills and change their mind-set to become more productive in life by developing resilience too. Resilience ensures that one can live a thriving and fruitful life. Issues of anxiety, depression, relationships, peer pressure, better academic management, technology addiction, body image, low self-esteem, educational challenges, self-harm and suicidal ideation, etc. can all be managed with timely intervention- which are a few causes of concerns among adolescent students today. Badges were distributed among faculty members and they were asked to wear them to support the cause. A poster and video was made and shared, to spread awareness among students.
